What is Free Clinics of Michigan (FCOM)?
In 1996, free clinic directors from Michigan and Illinois
met to discuss how they might support each other in
providing health care to the uninsured. Out of this meeting
evolved the Free Clinics of the Great Lake Region-now a
seven state network of 250 clinics. Later in 2000, the
Michigan Clinics organized a subset of FCGLR (Free Clinics
of the Great Lakes Region), the Free Clinics of Michigan.
FCOM is a loosely structured, grassroots, volunteer
organization. Leadership is provided by an elected State
Coordinator and five District Representatives. More than 40
clinics belong to FCOM. Once a clinic is a member of FCGLR,
they are automatically a member of FCOM. Clinics that do
participate actively in FCOM benefit from a network of
generous, dedicated professionals, eager to support each
other.
